Why a Geodesic Dome?

Traditional Tunnel Greenhouses are an inefficient shape to effectively collect solar energy, they are poorly insulated, handle very little snow load and are easily damaged by high winds.

Geodesic Domes are a unique structure whose collection of triangles is incredibly strong, significantly more efficient at collecting solar energy and can handle a surprising amount of snow load and hurricane winds.

Want to know what makes Newroots Geodesic Domes better? Why do they work so well? How do they work? What are they made of?
Well let's dive into what makes our Geodesic Domes and Kits the best in the industry.

Ours are bigger

Geodesic Domes on the market are only a 4/9 Dome, meaning they have 4 rows of triangles.

Newroots Domes are all 5/9 Domes adding an additional vertical wall of triangles, creating significantly more space inside and more than twice the vertical wall height.

Designed and Fabricated in Canada

Every aspect of our Dome Greenhouse is actually Canadian. From the design and engineering, parts manufacturing and material sourcing to the installation.

Unlike other dome companies reselling US dome kits or chinese parts with poor quality control, we actually design and fabricate our domes here in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan using Canadian material suppliers and local manufacturing.

Which is also why Newroots Domes are tougher, better insulated and built to handle even the harshest winters that Canada has to offer.

Insulated North Wall

Most "insulated" domes use a thin Reflectix material on the north wall and foundations walls, with little to no insulating value.

Our Insulated North Wall and Foundation Walls are a full thickness, 3.5" barrier of R15 Foam with a reflective panel on the inside. It covers 1/3 or 1/4 of the dome, depending on the domes location and surroundings. This protects the dome from heat-stripping, chilly north winds and provides unmatched insulating value for a large part of the Dome's surface that never receives light anyways. It also reflects solar heat into the Thermal Mass Pond in winter, to be released at night.

In-Bed Heating and Cooling

Newroots In-Bed Heating/Cooling System keeps the inside raised perimeter beds warm, even in our -40 winter nights. And in summer is circulates hot air from the ceiling of the dome, through the beds, so the soil can absorb the heat, and blows the cool air out.

We use carefully calculated, high volume brushless fans to move the perfect amount of air for optimal thermal transfer.

16mm Triple Wall Polycarbonate

The panelling we use is the industry's best, state of the art 16mm Triple Wall Polycarbonate with an insulating value of R2.8 and U0.40. It has 74% light transmission, unmatched impact resistance, 2 sided UV protection and a 10 Year Warranty. The polycarbonate is the most expensive part of the dome materials, accounting for over 1/3 the cost, but is also a major factor in providing the needed light, structure strength for snowloading and insulating values that make our 4 season domes possible.

Thermal Mass Pond

Newroots Thermal Mass Pond collects solar energy during the day and slowly releases that heat during cool evening or cloudy days.  It can be used to house fish, to feed hydroponic systems, for watering or just as a beautiful addition to your Dome Greenhouse.

They are dug 2 feet into the ground and raise up 2 ft out of the ground.

Pictured is a custom 5x6ft pond, 4 feet deep that we did for a customer in their 22ft Newroots Dome.

Every pond comes standard with a Filter system and pump, UV filter and Fountain.

Every 22ft and 32ft Dome Installation includes the installation of a pond.

The kits include the liner and filters to install yourself.

Ground-to-Air Climate Battery

Newroots optional Ground to Air Heating/Cooling Climate Battery is similar to the in-bed heating/cooling system. However it consists of a series of 4" pipes buried 4 feet below the ground, underneath the Dome and is much more effective.

In summer, hot air is collected from the top of the dome, circulated through the ground and back out, transferring heat into the ground and blowing out cool air.

In the shoulder seasons, cool air is circulated back through the ground in the evening where that heat is used to warm the air coming back in.

This passive system uses very little power and significantly reduces the heating cost in the shoulder months and helps cool your greenhouse in the summer months.
